Culture Night to celebrate ‘One Night For All’ in Donegal – Donegal Daily

Donegal County Council’s Culture Division is proud to present its 14th annual Culture Night program of events, the an island-wide public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts.

Taking place this Friday the 23rdrd September, Culture Night is “A Night for All” with events taking place throughout the county.

This exceptional night of cultural festivities takes place once a year as part of a national celebration of arts, heritage and culture.

Commenting on this year’s event, Donegal County Council Arts Officer Traolach Ó Fionnáin said: “This year’s program marks a return to live and in-person events, with over 30 events taking place all over Donegal. All of our participating artists, venues and bands are looking forward to performing live in front of the public again without restrictions.

“It will be great to see the villages and towns of the county come alive with culture, creativity and the arts on Culture Night and we are thrilled to see it all come together.

“As always, all Culture Night events are free, making it a great affordable and accessible way for people to spend a Friday night with family, friends or alone. Please check the schedule in advance to see if reservations are required for the events you hope to attend.


In Letterkenny City Park, Inishowen Carnival will feature Caibleadh – Spirit Voices From The Sea. The event features great sea spirit figures such as the selkie, sea serpent, sea god and merrow, light sculptures and performances from dance and street performers.


On Culture Night, the Donegal County Museum will present Living History Tours: Life in the Workhouse (6:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.). Step back in time and hear the stories of life in County Donegal’s workhouses during the revolutionary period of those who lived and worked there. The Ann Doherty Collection, featuring never-before-seen and breathtaking photographs of people living in extraordinary situations around the world in countries such as Sierra Leone, Egypt and Italy, will also be on display. The Donegal Vintage and Classic Car club will also be there from 6-8pm with their beloved vintage vehicles. Turas Úr is a collective of visual artists from the Donegal Gaeltacht, who bring sculptural responses to their environment. For Culture Night, a special exhibition of illuminated sculptures will take place in the Workhouse Garden next to the Donegal County Museum, with participating artists Leanne McLaughlin, Cathal McGinley, Ewan Berry, Ed Devane, Laura Nic Dhuibhir, Mickey McFadden and Máire Nic Fhearraigh.


Meet at the Regional Cultural Center this Night of Culture for a Premiere of an animated video game: a new topography of love. Other events include a Kids Workshop Indoor Drive-Movie from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in which families are invited to show up and build their own car for an indoor cinematic experience. There will also be a Open rehearsal with the Donegal Youth Orchestra and The Letterkenny Company will begin at 8 p.m. Mary Toland: Guardians will also be on display.


To celebrate Culture Night 2022, the Central Library will host various events, including a Walking tour of historic Letterkenny at 6pm. Esteemed local historian and author Kieran Kelly will take you on one of his legendary city tours, while in the library you can enjoy a Backstage tour, during which you can discover the resources the library has available for tracing Donegal ancestors or researching the history of the county.


Celebrate Culture Night at the Saldanha Gallery, Fort Dunree with Drawing soil: In response to The Seed That Stops The Heart, a solo exhibition by Louise Spokes, Artlink will host an experimental drawing workshop using earth pigments including rocks, soil, plants and flowers in the space of the gallery surrounded by Spokes’ exquisite designs. The workshop is open to all ages and abilities but places will be limited. To book, please email [email protected].

Other events on this year’s schedule include Right circle at the Cottage Bar, Conway Cabaret at Conway’s Bar, Ramelton, and the Flann O’Brien Trail Walking Tour organized by The Alley Theater and the Strabane Historic Society, culminating in Lifford Old Courthouse. To find out more see
